@29nrth and @whitwhitehouse bring the Ascent Series back to the Embark Coworking Community in the form of a conservation presentation followed by a photo gallery opening.
Whitney Whitehouse is a Bend-based photographer and outdoorswoman raised in Central Oregon. Her local upbringing cultivated a fervent love and passion for the outdoors and the magnificent wildlife of the Pacific Northwest. Her photography career began eight years ago, and recently shifted toward a focus on conservation, which began while photographing birds in her backyard. With a deep love and appreciation for all animals (and particularly her dog, Jasper), Whitney’s work serves to increase awareness around the protection of wildlife and their natural habitats.
Fueled by spontaneous drive and boundless curiosity about the natural world, Whitney traveled to a rugged and remote corner of Southwest Alaska in September 2022 to photograph the brown bears of Katmai National Park.
Ten days camping off-grid at Brooks Camp—only accessible via float plane—offered an intimate look at the lives and behavior of wild brown bears. The experience taught Whitney about the complexities of conservation, bear communication, the interconnectedness of the greater Katmai ecosystem, and the reality of documenting wildlife in a harsh, beautiful world.
Whitney’s first-hand stories, photos, and videos from interactions with the Katmai bears aim to instill a heightened appreciation for wildlife and the preservation of their dwindling wild habitats.
